Annual Essay Competition 2020
Wisdemy is a non-profit initiative founded by Dr Kaleel Rahman with the intention of understanding unique human experiences and values over time and how do their early life impact late life success in work and life, and how do some trivial, mundane events and extraordinary turns shape their life.
Essay topic: Unsung hero from my village
Unsung hero is someone who does a great job yet receives little or no recognition for that. An unsung hero usually refrains from claiming too much in return for his/her efforts. This is an opportunity for you to write about an important person in your village – someone not known for his/her contributions but deserves some attention.
Village: Village can interpreted as your community. It can be the town or small village you live in (gramaya/ kiramam/oor/ kuruchchi/ line/ block/ street/ division etc).
Participant can write about anyone from his/her own district but the participant MUST obtain consent from the hero or a close relative of the hero.
The hero can be someone who died or currently living. If currently living, that person must be aged 70 or above.
The writing should be a narration based on true events capturing a balance of trivial, mundane and extraordinary turns of events.
Submission should be 2000 to 2500 words plus 5 to 10 photos (photos can be a mixture of old and new persons, village, surroundings, work, play, rituals, house, objects, etc) and footnotes and cover letter.
Expression of interest should be submitted on or before 15th October 2020.
Due date of submission of essay: 31 October 2020 (11.59pm, Sri Lanka time).
You may write your essay in any three language (English/ Tamil/ Sinhala) but one person can submit only one essay.
Prizes:
First prize Rs. 10,000/ plus certificate.
Second prize Rs. 7,000/ plus certificate.
Third prize Rs. 5000/ plus certificate.
Constellation prices: 10 constellation prices plus certificates.
Selected heroes may be invited to “Wisdemy Telling Life with Dr Rahman” conversation program.
Who can participate? Any Sri Lankan aged 16 to 30 years old.
Submission must be certified by a school teacher or a justice of peace or a religious leader from your village or town. Final submission can be made in soft-copy or hard-copy.
Judge’s decision will be final.
